Fc receptor (FcR) is a group of surface membrane molecules that specifically recognize and bind homologous or heterologous immunoglobulin molecules via the Fc portion and which putatively mediate biological function. Fc receptor (FcR) has its name which is originated from its binding to the antibody Fc-portion. Fc receptor (FcR) can be found on the surface of some immune cells, including monocytes, T lymphocytes, B lymphocytes, neutrophils and eosinophils. Fc receptor (FcR) is involved in the regulation of many immune responses such as antibody-dependent cell-mediated cytotoxicity (ADCC), clearance of antigen antibody complex via receptor mediated endocytosis, ligand-triggered transmission of signals across the plasma membrane which results in alteration in secretion, exocytosis and cellular metabolism.
The significance of Fc receptor (FcR) lies on the fact that it builds a bridge between the specificity of the adaptive immune system and the powerful effector functions triggered by innate immune effector cells.
