As members of growth factor receptors, platelet-derived growth factor receptors (PDGF receptors) are cell surface receptors that play a crucial role in regulating cell proliferation, cellular differentiation, cell growth, development and many diseases including cancer. There are two forms of PDGF receptor, PDGF α receptor and PDGF β receptor. Constitutive activation of PDGF α receptor or PDGF β receptor is seen in myeloid malignancies as a consequence of fusion to diverse partner genes, and activating mutations of PDGF α receptor are seen in gastrointestinal tumors (GISTs).
