SMAD1 (SMAD Family Member 1) is a protein coding gene located on human chromosome 4q31.21. SMAD1 is also known as BSP1, JV41, BSP-1, JV4-1, MADH1 and MADR1. The human SMAD1 gene encodes a 52260 Da protein containing 465 amino acids. The SMAD1 protein is ubiquitously expressed in endometrium, brain and other tissues. Among its related pathways are Transcriptional misregulation in cancer and Signaling by GPCR. SMAD1 is related to DNA-binding transcription factor activity and protein kinase binding. SMAD5 is an important paralog of SMAD1 gene. SMAD1 is associated with some diseases, including Buschke-Ollendorff Syndrome and Melorheostosis.
