MMP15 (Matrix Metallopeptidase 15, also known as MT2MMP; MTMMP2; SMCP-2), located on 16q21, is a Protein Coding gene. The encoded protein is a membrane-bound protease that degrades the extracellular matrix and activates pro-MMPs. MMP15 belongs to the peptidase M10A family. It contains a predicted transmembrane segment at the C terminus. MMP15 shares 73.9% sequence similarity with MMP14, a membrane-localized MMP that also contains a C-terminal transmembrane segment. The protein MMP15 may play a role in cancer progression. It has been identified to be a target of miR-339-5p.

    Membrane-type 2 matrix metalloproteinase (MT2-MMP; also known as MMP15) is a membrane-bound protease that degrades extracellular matrix and activates ProMMPs such as ProMMP-2. MMP15 is the membrane-type MMP (MT-MMP) which is a recently identified matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) capable of degrading all kinds of extracellular matrix proteins as well as numerous bioactive molecules. Matrix metalloproteinase 15 (MMP15) is the functional regulated gene of miR-339-5p in breast carcinoma. The MMP15 was identified to be a target of miR-339-5p. The level of MMP15 was negatively regulated by miR-339-5p whereas positively controlled by MAFG-AS1. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), a family of zinc-dependent endopeptidases, are involved in a variety of physiological and pathological processes. MMP7 and MMP15 were overexpressed in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) patients.
