YWHAH (Tyrosine 3-Monooxygenase/Tryptophan 5-Monooxygenase Activation Protein Eta) is a protein coding gene located on human chromosome 22q12.3. YWHAH is also known as YWHA1. The human YWHAH gene encodes a 28219 Da protein containing 246 amino acids. The YWHAH protein is broadly expressed in brain, lung and other tissues. Among its related pathways are Apoptosis Modulation and Signaling and Regulation of Wnt-mediated beta catenin signaling and target gene transcription. YWHAH is related to protein heterodimerization activity and actin binding. YWHAG is an important paralog of YWHAH gene. YWHAH is associated with some diseases, including Early-Onset Schizophrenia and Schizophrenia.

      14-3-3 eta/YWHAH Background

      YWHAH, the gene encoding the 14-3-3eta isoform, is highly expressed in retinal ganglion cells (RGC). YWHAH is a positional and functional candidate gene for both schizophrenia and bipolar disorder (BP). It is located on chromosome 22q12.3, a region that has been implicated by linkage studies in both BP and schizophrenia.
